Substrates | | Merlex Fogcoat will create an excellent bond to any property prepared portland cement based surface. |
Colors | | Merlex Fogcoat is readily available In 30 standard colors. Fogcoat can be made to match any Merlex Stucco coIor. |
Coverage | | One 25 Ib (I 1.35 kg) bag covers approximately 1500 to 2000 SQ. ft . (138 to 184 m2). |
Surface Preparation | | Merlex Fogcoat is designed to be applied to portland cement surfaces, which have not been painted or sealed. All receiving surfaces must be structurally sound, clean, free of dust, dirt, silicones, paint products, efflorescence or any other contaminants which could impair the natural bond. Major cracks, holes or voids should be repaired prior to application. Note: For application over smooth surfaces contact a Merlex representative for special recommendations. |
Mixing | | Add enough clean water to form a heavy paste (about 1 qt. [.95 Itr] water per each 5 ibs. [2.3 kg] of Fogcoat) and mix in paste consistency until no lumps remain. Allow to stand for approximately 10 minutes. Add additional water to bring to the approximate consistency of milk and stir thoroughly. This requires approximately 1/2 gal. (I.9Itr) of water per 1 lb. (.454 kg) of Fogcoat or 13 to 16 gals. (12.3 to 15.2 Itr) per 25lb. (11 .35 kg) bag. Strain through a fine mesh screen such as a painter screen or nylon stocking. Caution:Do not over dilute. |
Application | | Merlex Fogcoat may be applied using a portable hand pump sprayer, an airless sprayer, or a pressure tank-type sprayer. Note:Hoses should be sufficiently long enough to allow efficient application. For maximum results use a nozzle which forms a fan spray pattern. Stir or shake container frequently during application to prevent settling. Prior to application it is advisable to test a small area to check color. Holding the nozzle approximately 2 It. (.6 m) away from the wall, apply Fogcoat in a cross coat fashion to insure even coverage. Normal procedure is to apply from one architectural stoppage to another, such as a corner to corner or control joint to control joint. Normally it is not advisable to spot fog a wall. However, in certain cases it can be done successfully. Apply two thin coats allowing ample time (approximately 15 min.) between coats for the first to dry. Do not apply the second coat until the first coat has dried. Always avoid heavy buildups. For two story buildings, extension wands may be employed to accomplish spraying from the ground. Overspray that gets onto glass, painted wood and metal surfaces should be allowed to dry before wiping off. However, it is always best to protect all other surfaces with proper masking prior to application. For production work, apply Fogcoat to the plaster before window cleaners begin their operation. |
Curing | | Fogcoat will become an integral part of the wall if it is sufficiently cured. Natural curing can take place when the air is damp or foggy following application. During hot and/or dry weather conditions, the Fogcoat must be cured by using a clean misty spray of water. Repeat process daily until chalkiness has disappeared. Caution: When curing newly applied Fogcoat, do not use a heavy stream of water. |
Clean Up | | Clean all equipment thoroughly immediately after use with clean water. This will prevent cement from setting up which could clog hoses or passageways. |
Limitations | | Do not apply during periods of extended fog or rain. Do not apply if ambient temperature is below 40° F (4° C) or over 100° F (39° C). Do not apply to wet walls. Fogcoat is designed to hide problems related to variations in color, but cannot be expected to correct unsatisfactory finish techniques such as poor jointing at scaffold decks or the juncture of material applied by two plasterers on one wall who use significantly different techniques. Some wall stains which have a chemical or oil base may bleed through the Fogcoat. If this problem exists, contact a Merlex representative for recommendations. |
